It was the middle of the afternoon, and Devon was watching Joshua take a much-needed nap after their lengthy mating session. He smiled fondly when he saw the four white marks on Joshua’s shoulder, marks left there by his canines. He could definitely get used to this, to having his mate in his arms, the both of them happy and content.

But he knew they would have to leave the peaceful cabin soon. He had to go back to Dorbank and challenge Thomas to another duel within 48 hours of the original duel. With Joshua’s strength, he could knew he could take the other werewolf.

Sweet? He sent to Joshua, pushing at him through their bond.

Joshua scrunched up his nose, turning to cuddle up closer to Devon. “Mmm.”

Devon sighed, running his fingers through Joshua’s soft hair. “Sweet, I’m gonna have a sniff around the cabin, all right? I want to check if the two Betas who were after me are still in the area.”

“Mmsure,” Joshua muttered, his eyes still closed.

Devon carefully extracted himself from Joshua’s arms and the bed. If he was lucky, Elliot and Flint had gone back to Thomas to report that Devon had run far away and wouldn’t bother him anymore. If he wasn’t lucky…

He stepped out onto the porch, still naked, and shifted quickly. His wolf, while also happy to be with his true mate, was immediately alert, wandering off the porch and sniffing around. This close to the cabin, the smell of Joshua and sex was strong. It was tempting to head back inside and do it all over again, but Devon made himself walk away from the cabin, ignoring the protests of his wolf. They had to keep their mate safe.

Once he was a few hundred yards away, the scent of Joshua was less of a distraction, and he picked up on the scents of the two Betas. They had been nearby.

He followed their tracks, and realised they had been too damn close to the cabin. All right, he felt 100 miles was too close to the cabin. Still, Elliot and Flint had tracked him down, so why hadn’t they attacked him?

He stood still for a moment, pawing at the ground as he thought. The scent of the two Betas was recent, no more than an hour or so old. Where were they now?

Then a chill ran down his spine. They had smelled him and Joshua fucking, and they had smelled them fucking for a long time. Elliot and Flint weren’t idiots; they knew the difference between a regular fuck and the sex required to forge a mating bond.

Elliot and Flint knew he had found a mate. What Devon hoped they hadn’t realised was that it was his true mate. Either way, they were nearby, probably hiding out somewhere. Devon could track them down and attack them first, but it would be two against one. With his mating bond, he would have the strength, but he couldn’t deal with Flint and Elliot and then go and challenge Thomas.
